Throwing Stones for Fun

President's Message

As we move through summer and realize that we will not reach those goals of improving our golf scores cy a consistent 5 strokes or catching that big fish,, our dreams thru the challenge of the winter: Those of beating LeCerte, Sirianne or Tillisch.  Just like for summer events, there is a need to do the preparation to meet our goals for the winter events.  We need to get the rosters in to the league chairs, volunteer for the ICE COMMETTEE, attend the skips’ meeting, and sign up to volunteer for club functions.  These activities and the socialization linked to curling will make the season enjoyable – even if you are unable to out-score your friends on the ice.

Rosters and league sign up forms are included with this newsletter and are also available online.  Submit your team rosters promptly; leagues do have a maximum of 12 teams and entries are on a “first com/first in” basis.  Information on the Monday Night Open Draft League and Cal and Marcia’s Curling Clinic is also available.

Skips are encouraged to include rookies when filling rosters.  Marcia Tillisch is an excellent resource when trying to add a member who has curled in the Rookie League.

In its first season, the Monday Night Draft League was a big success, fielding 10 teams.  I would like to extend the Board’s thanks to Rollie and Bernie Corsten for their efforts and ongoing coordination of this new league.

Membership Dues:  We all have faced the challenge of increased utility costs.  The club’s utility bills rose by over 23% in 2007/2008.  To cover the increased operating cost, we needed to use bonspiel earning.  The dues increase for 2008/2009 was kept within reason by a Board decision to again use bonspiel profits for operation expenses for 2008/2009.  When establishing the dues structure for this coming season, the Board recognized that a dramatic increase in dues could have a negative impact on membership and did not want that to happen.  So, remember as you volunteer by giving you time or contributing cooking and bars, every little bit you can do will help to keep our dues lower.

Volunteers:  The success of our club is dependent on its member volunteers.  The first opportunity to volunteer is essential to the curling season getting off to a good, timely start.  The setting up of the club requires many hours of work in putting the ice arena and club room back together in good shape.  Contact Jan Christianson or Dennis Tietge to get on their email list for a schedule.  Work sessions are generally 3 hours in the late afternoon.  And, the breaks are filled with curling hospitality!

Fund Raising / Facility Development:  Site development continues.  Positive issues are being discussed at the Board level.  Cal Tillisch and Brian Gumness will report at the Fall Meeting.

In closing:  Remember that the health of every organization is dependent on involving new people in all aspects of its operation.  Get involved and encourage other to be involved.  The board will be seeking members for all committees.  Sign up sheets will be posted.

A wise curler once said:  “When on the ice, do not hide your talent under a basket.  You will melt the ice and Dennis will be very upset.”

Good Curling!
