Seniors Curl Until the Cows Come Home
If you are free Monday, Wednesday, or Friday morning, come have fun with us. Games start at 9:00 sharp. you don't have to be a senior to curl even though this group is referred to as the "Seniors". The group started as a Wednesday morning curling group, but there was so much enthusiasm for this format that it was expanded to include Monday and Friday mornings. Teams are formed each morning by curlers drawing for rock color, sheet and starting position. After two ends, everyone rotates to the next position. At the finish of the eight ends, all curlers have played all positions. The group welcomes experienced curlers, beginners, curlers with any sort of delivery -- including the stick -- men, women, young and old. Most of us come early for coffee and stay a bit after the game to socialize. The club offers a reduced dues rate of $105 for curlers who want to join only for this time slot. Those who join for Senior-Only can participate in Bonspiels, but they can not substitute in any other league. You don't have to register with a team; just show up the first Wednesday in November. We'll collect your dues. Come occasionally or be a regular.
Ice Committee Helps a Member in Need
The WCC ice committee took on a special project this summer: building a handicapped accessible ramp at the home of one of our club members, Eric Troseth. Eric, one of the curlers who helped Dennis prepare the ice several days a week for the past several years, had his foot and part of his leg amputated this spring, and now uses crutches or a wheelchair to get into this home. Ice committee members involved in this service project included Dennis Tietge, Jeff Johnson, Dan Oilseed, Jim Merest, Ray Nowaczyk, Howie Fisher, Jan Christianson, Bob See, Jack Flaker, and Chuck Johnson. Dennis planned the ramp and organized the work detail. In spite of digging two extra holes, the crew completed the job in one day.
Fundraising for the New Club
We are continuing efforts to try to obtain real estate at the "farmers' market" site on Rive Drive. This site has unique synergies because it would work for a curling club, add facilities for the kayak course, and promote downtown Wausau. the key ingredient to successful fundraising is the the facility has other uses when it is not used as a curling club.
We will continue our fundraising efforts. Our goal is $3 million. We are very happy that $1.25 million was raised in the first year. This is already more money than any other curling club has every raised in the history of the United States.
The new facility will include a bricks and tiles program and naming rights features. We will seek larger donation for naming rights. All past and current members of the Wausau Curling Club (and anyone else) will be given an opportunity to have their name (or a friend's or relative's name) be part of the facility. Everyone will be given an opportunity to have their name be part of the facility with the bricks and tiles program.
