New Wausau Curling Center Site Plan

October 26, 2011– Wausau, Wisconsin - Wausau Curling announced today plans are underway to construct a new home for the growing international sport of curling in the Wausau area.  The site of the new Wausau Curling Center is centrally located within the community at the east end of Kent Street off Grand Avenue.  Construction is scheduled to commence in the spring of 2012.  The new state-of-the-art Wausau Curling Center will nearly double the playing capacity of the antiquated facility in Marathon Park.  This will be the largest curling specific facility in the United States and will house eight regulation Olympic sheets.

A primary mission of the Wausau Curling Center is to meet the currently unmet playing time demands from Wausau’s three public high school curling programs and expand afterschool interscholastic programs to other area schools.  The Wausau Curling Center will also house and expand upon a full slate of junior’s, women’s, men’s, mixed, and senior’s leagues and bonspiel (tournament) activities which already attract hundreds of out-of-town participants, their supporters and curling fans to the Wausau area each year.  The Center’s modern design fully integrates accessibility for mobility restricted players, a growing segment of the sport and tremendously enhances the Wausau area’s ability to host state, regional, national and Olympic qualifying events.

In the design of the new Wausau Curling Center we’ve been able to achieve a world class facility that meets our self-imposed mandate to grow the sport while keeping curling an affordable wintertime option for every Wausau-area resident.  This facility would not be possible without the generous support of many area philanthropic foundations and major individual donors including:

  • The B.A. and Esther Greenheck Foundation;
  • The Judd S. Alexander Foundation;
  • The Walter Alexander Foundation;
  • The Dudley Foundation;
  • The Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin;
  • George and Estelle Wolff,
  • Ruth and Paul Schultz,
  • Ron Klimisch;
  • The Dwight and Linda Davis Foundation and
  • The donation of our site by the Wausau Cemetery Association

“With this tremendous community support we have raised more than two-thirds of the project’s estimated $3 million cost in less than one year,” stated Dr. Corey Sandquist, president of Wausau Curling Club, Inc. "Our membership and community outreach to raise the remaining $1 million in cash and in-kind donations required to complete the project begins today.  The excitement for what this project will mean to the Wausau community and the involvement by non-curlers is truly remarkable.  It would be our hope that the entire community embraces and participates in this effort to enhance Wausau’s reputation as Central Wisconsin’s most unique destination.  Our fundraising committees are highly motivated and soon will engage with the community to bring this world class sports facility to Wausau.”
